Description

Title of the work:

Siena. Piazza del Campo

Pepi Merisio's relationship with Siena has always been intense and profound. Since the 1960s, Merisio has traveled to the city several times to photograph the Palio and its people. For the Bergamo-born photographer, Siena was an almost obligatory stop, even during his frequent trips to Rome in the service of Pope Paul VI. In this shot, the iconic and unmistakable Piazza del Campo is not teeming with people gathered to support their contrada and their horse, but is calm, almost "still," covered in a white and romantic layer of fresh snow. His bond with the city was sealed in 1972 with the publication of a book entitled "Siena: a land, a history, a celebration," with texts by his friend and then-mayor Roberto Barzanti.

Technical specifications:

  • Siena, 1985
  • 30x40 cm
  • Inkjet print on paper
  • “Courtesy Museo delle Storie di Bergamo – Archivio fotografico Sestini”

This work was donated by Merisio Pepi.

For this charitable initiative, Memorabid is responsible for collecting pre-auction bids.

The final closing of the lot will take place during the event on Monday, November 3rd, at 6:30 PM in the Salone d'Onore at Triennale Milano.

At the end of the pre-auction, the highest bid received for each lot will constitute the starting bid for the in-person event. If there are no further bids, the pre-auction winner will definitively win the lot.

Pre-auction winners will receive an email inviting them to raise a maximum bid, which will be carried forward to the auction on November 3rd to protect the interests of the online pre-auction participant.

Winners of the online pre-auction will also be offered the opportunity to defend their bid by participating remotely at the November 3rd event, via the telephone auction mechanism directly through the CAF Association.
