Description

"Humans", 2026, Photographic work by Davide Barzaghi.

The work is part of Davide Barzaghi's Lovers project, which develops as a poetic and critical reflection on the themes of love, intimacy, and relationships. It's not simply about representing two people in love, but about exploring what happens in the invisible space between them: tension, desire, distance, fusion, fragility.

Barzaghi often works with essential, suspended, almost archetypal figures. In Lovers' works, bodies tend to approach, touch, or brush against each other, but the encounter is rarely completely resolved. There is always a threshold: a moment before contact or an instant after. This creates a strong emotional charge, because the viewer finds themselves within that tension, as if witnessing something extremely private.

Formally, the project plays on contrasts: solids and voids, light and shadow, presence and absence. The figures can appear stylized, sometimes almost silhouetted, and the space around them becomes crucial. It's not a neutral backdrop: it's an emotional field that amplifies the relationship between the subjects.

An interesting aspect of Lovers is that love isn't idealized in a romantic or decorative way. On the contrary, its ambivalent dimension also emerges: love as need and risk, as total openness to the other but also as the possibility of loss. In this sense, the project speaks not only to couples, but to the broader human condition: the desire for connection and the fear of vulnerability.

More symbolically, the "lovers" can be read as a metaphor for polarities seeking balance: masculine and feminine, identity and otherness, individual and collective. The work thus becomes a space for reflection on what it truly means to "be in relationship."
