Ex Inter Iván Zamorano said he had to thank Nerazzurri legend Sandro Mazzola for the famous 1+8 shirt.
«The 1+8 shirt? The idea was born when the best in the world (Ronaldo) came to Inter. I had to give him the number 9. I didn’t play with many Brazilians, but I played with the best of them all: Luiz Nazario de Lima Ronaldo. Of all the people I played with, Ronaldo was the strongest».
To make the Brazilian feel the full confidence of the Inter world, Zamorano made a special gesture:
«After the 1998 World Cup, Ronie lived a particular period. We all understood that something had to be done to make him understand how special it really was for us and I decided to leave him my '9'. Mazzola told me: 'Ivan, you can always fall back on a sum: 18, 27, see you... '. Then I immediately went to Moratti to ask him if it was possible to insert a '+' between the numbers: I got the ok, I turned to the warehouse workers and played with a piece of adhesive tape on my back. My shirt became the most popular in stores, so much so that Nike began to produce it with the '+' already printed».
