Description

This is a 1000 Lire banknote from the Bank of Italy issued in 1947. It is a historical piece highly appreciated by numismatic collectors.

After World War II, Italy went through a period of high inflation and economic instability. The 1000 Lire banknotes of this series were among the first issued in the post-war period, reflecting a time of transition in the Italian monetary system. By 1947, the value of the lira was undergoing severe devaluations and the need for high-denomination banknotes was increasing.

This series was issued before the more famous 1000 Lire "Italy adorned with pearls", which became iconic in the following decade.

Features of the Banknote:

  • Issuer: Banca d'Italia
  • Nominal value: 1000 Lire
  • Date of the ministerial decree: 14 August 1947
  • Serial number: 041367
  • Design:
  1. On the left side there is a female portrait, probably inspired by a classical work of art.
  2. In the centre there is the nominal value "MILLE" and the red seal of the Banca d'Italia.
  3. Elaborate frames and decorations typical of the period.
  4. Dimensions: Approximately 172 x 92 mm
  5. Predominant colour: Tones of grey, black and sepia
